The attack on Darwin, February 1942

On February 19th, 1942 the same carrier-borne force that attacked Pearl Harbour turned it’s guns on Darwin. They dropped more bombs, killed more people and sunk more ships than they had at Pearl Harbour. They had made many mistakes in the Pearl Harbour attack that they did not repeat in Darwin.

The town was left devastated and it still remains the worst death toll of any disaster ever in Australia.

The window of Rainy Day Books pays homage to those brave men of the Australian forces and the terrified civilians who rallied to help.

There are copies of “An awkward truth" by Peter Grose and some other interesting military books about the Australian forces.

Keep on eye out for the announcement of a huge sale in March at Rainy Day Books.

Valentine's Day

Romance is in the air and what better way to indulge yourself than with a good read and a box of chocolates.
The chocolates need to be good quality and so does the reading.
Lots of romance, chick lit and light reading novels in the shop at the moment.
From erotic novels to bodice rippers and even Barbara Cartland with her discrete ***************************** to cover up any “under the sheets” activity.
Books are great escapism and love and romance are great to read about when you are going through a partnerless phase in your life.
You never know you might bump into Mr/Mrs Right here in the shop.
I have had one or two relationships start with a discussion in the shelves.

Coming up to Valentine's Day

How quickly we become involved in the yearly schedule.  Especially young Mums who have had to prepare their kids for school - some for the very first time.   With the on again-off again heat wave we've been experiencing, it's time to take a little "time out" and relax with a favourite book or two, or three!  It doesn't matter what age we are - there are still books that will enthral, entertain, educate and just be plain fun to read.

Valentine's Day is almost here.   A special time too to think of special loved ones - a husband, a wife, a partner, a friend, a family member.   So many things to choose from - and sometimes we lose sight of the fact that gifts at Valentine's Day (as with other special dates throughout the year) can be small, intimate gifts.   They don't always have to cost the earth!

Books are always welcome.   And there are so many to choose from.   Take take to visit Rainy Day Books and browse through the bookshop.   You'll always find nice surprises.   Great selections for men, for women, for kids.  Special interest books - lovely coffee table books.   Mystery, adventure, crime, light fiction, you name it.

And if you don't think anyone will send you a Valentine's gift - why not pamper yourself and buy yourself a special book - one that has taken your eye.  As the old saying goes - you deserve the best!
